Aluminium Gates vs Steel and Timber: Which Lasts Longest?

Choosing a gate material is really choosing what you are prepared to maintain. All three common options can look excellent on day one; they diverge sharply over a decade.

As an aluminium gate manufacturer we are not neutral, so this comparison sticks to the properties you can verify yourself.

Corrosion

Aluminium forms a stable oxide layer and does not rust. Steel does, wherever the coating is chipped or drilled, and coastal or salted-road environments accelerate it. Timber does not rust but absorbs moisture, swells and eventually rots at the bottom rail where water sits.

Weight and automation

A wide steel double gate can weigh several times its aluminium equivalent. That weight is carried by the hinges, the posts and — on an automated entrance — the motor, every single cycle. Lower weight is the main reason aluminium gates tend to outlast the automation fitted to them.

Maintenance over ten years

  • Aluminium: wash the powder coat occasionally; check hinges annually.
  • Steel: inspect for chips, treat and touch up, expect periodic repainting.
  • Timber: sand, treat or repaint on a regular cycle; monitor the bottom rail and hinge fixings.

Design freedom

Aluminium extrusions and laser-cut panels allow slat spacing, privacy infills and intricate patterns that would be heavy or expensive in steel. Every AlumaGates collection — Classic, Classic Mix, York, Laser, London, Darlington and Oxford — is available as a driveway gate, a matching pedestrian gate and fence panels in one colour.

Lifetime cost

Aluminium usually sits above basic steel on the initial quote and below bespoke hardwood. Once you add the repainting, rust treatment and earlier motor replacement that heavier materials tend to require, the lifetime picture generally favours aluminium on a driveway that is used every day.

Frequently asked questions

Are aluminium gates strong enough for a driveway?
Yes. Structural aluminium profiles are engineered for the span, and the frames are welded and reinforced. Rigidity comes from the profile design, not simply from raw mass.
Can aluminium gates look like wood?
Yes — wood-effect powder coat finishes are available alongside the full RAL range, so you get a timber appearance without the maintenance.
Do aluminium gates fade?
A marine-grade powder coat holds its colour for many years in UK conditions. Occasional washing is all it needs.
