Electric Gates vs Automatic Gates: Is There Any Difference?

Search for electric gates and automatic gates and you will land on almost identical pages. That is not an accident — the two phrases describe one product from two directions.
"Electric" describes the power source: a mains-fed motor at the gate posts. "Automatic" describes the behaviour: the gate opens and closes without you touching it. Every electric gate is automatic, and virtually every automatic gate is electric.
What you are really choosing between
The real decisions are not electric versus automatic. They are: swing or sliding, which motor, which access control, and which gate design and colour.
Get those four right and the terminology stops mattering. Get them wrong and no amount of branding saves the installation.
Power supply at the gate
Electric gates need a fused mains supply run out to the posts, along with ducting for the photocell and intercom cabling. On new driveways this is trivial to plan; on a finished driveway it is the part most likely to add cost, so we identify it at survey stage rather than on installation day.
Solar and battery-assisted setups exist and can work well on low-traffic entrances, but a mains supply remains the most dependable option for a gate used several times a day.
Access control options
- Remote fobs — the default, simple and reliable.
- Coded keypads — useful for family members, cleaners and trades without extra fobs.
- Video intercoms — see and speak to callers before opening.
- Vehicle loops and free-exit sensors — the gate opens automatically as you drive out.
- Smartphone control — open the gate remotely and grant access to a delivery driver.
Why aluminium suits electric gates
An electric gate is only as reliable as the load its motor carries. Aluminium leaves weigh a fraction of steel, so the motor works easily, the hinges stay true and the whole system lasts longer between services.
Aluminium also does not rust. A marine-grade powder coat in any RAL colour or wood-effect finish keeps its appearance through British winters without annual repainting.
Frequently asked questions
- Are electric gates more expensive than automatic gates?
- No — they are the same thing. Price differences between quotes come from the gate design, the leaf size, the motor specification and the safety and access equipment included.
- Do electric gates work in a power cut?
- Every kit includes a manual release key so the gate can be opened by hand. Battery back-up can be added if you want powered operation during an outage.
- How much maintenance do electric gates need?
- An annual check of hinges, photocell alignment, force settings and back-up batteries is enough for most residential installations.
