Manual Gates: How to Buy Now and Automate Later

Manual aluminium double driveway gate in anthracite grey

Not every driveway needs a motor. Plenty of our customers want the gate now and the automation later, once the driveway is finished or the budget allows.

That is entirely sensible, but only if the gate is manufactured with automation in mind. Retrofitting a motor to a gate that was never prepared for one usually means new posts and new groundworks.

What makes a gate automation-ready

  • Posts sized and set in concrete to carry a motor's torque, not just the gate's weight.
  • Hinges compatible with an arm or underground drive.
  • Ducting laid under the driveway for power and photocell cabling before the surface goes down.
  • A leaf weight and span within the range of a standard residential motor.

Why manual gates cost less

There are no motors, control boards, photocells or commissioning hours in the price. The gate itself is manufactured to exactly the same standard, in the same collections and finishes, from the same aluminium profiles.

Keeping a manual gate secure

Options include drop bolts into ground sockets, slam locks, key-operated locks and padlock hasps, plus gate stops bedded into the driveway so the leaves cannot be pushed past their travel and strain the hinges.

Easy to handle every day

Aluminium weighs a fraction of steel, so even a wide double gate opens with one hand. That is the difference between a gate you actually close each night and one you leave open.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to automate a manual gate later?
If the posts, hinges and ducting were prepared at the outset, you are paying for the motor kit, the safety devices and a short installation visit — not for civil works.
Can I get a matching pedestrian gate?
Yes. Every collection can be produced as a matching side gate, fence panel and railing in the same colour and pattern.
Are manual gates less secure?
Not inherently. Security comes from the height, the infill and the locking arrangement rather than from the presence of a motor.
