Guide to Choosing Aluminium Driveway Gates in Nottingham

Nottingham driveways are unusually varied. Within a few miles you move from narrow Victorian frontages in Sherwood and Mapperley to wide, open plots in Wollaton, Gamston and Clifton — and the right aluminium gate is rarely the same on both.
This guide walks through the decisions we make on a Nottingham site survey: opening type, leaf configuration, style, finish and automation, plus what each one does to the final price.
Start with the opening, not the design
Measure the clear opening between the piers or posts and note the fall of the driveway from the road to the house. On many NG1–NG7 terraces the gate cannot swing outwards over a public pavement, which immediately points to a sliding gate or inward-opening leaves with adequate clearance.
Where the driveway rises towards the house, swing leaves need extra ground clearance or a raked bottom rail so they do not catch as they open.
- Under 3 m opening: single leaf or a cantilever sliding gate
- 3–4 m: unequal double leaves work well on tight terraces
- Over 4 m: double swing leaves, or a sliding gate where run-back allows
Matching the house: period frontages vs new builds
Period Nottingham homes usually suit vertical bar or classic infill designs with a curved or arched top, powder coated in black (RAL 9005) or heritage green.
Modern estates around Gamston, Edwalton and Wollaton are dominated by anthracite grey window frames, so flat horizontal slat gates in RAL 7016 read as part of the original architecture rather than an add-on.
Why aluminium rather than steel or timber
- No rust — powder coated aluminium handles wet Midlands winters without repainting
- Around a third of the weight of steel, so automation motors work less hard and last longer
- Stable in width: aluminium does not swell or drop like timber, so gaps stay even
- Any RAL colour, including wood-effect finishes for conservation-sensitive frontages
Automation: plan it even if you fit it later
Adding automation later is straightforward when the gate is built for it — heavier hinges, cable ducts under the driveway and a power supply at the pier. Retro-fitting all three after the block paving is down is what makes late automation expensive.
If you may want automated entry in future, tell us at the survey stage; the extra cost at build time is small.
What drives the Nottingham price
- Opening width and whether the gate is single, double or sliding
- Collection and infill density — solid privacy slats cost more than open bars
- Standard RAL colour vs bespoke or wood-effect finish
- Automation, intercom, keypad and safety photocells
- Groundwork: new posts, core drilling into stone piers, ducting
Frequently asked questions
- How much do aluminium driveway gates cost in Nottingham?
- Most Nottingham driveway gate projects fall between a manual single gate at the lower end and a wide automated double gate with intercom at the top. Price depends on opening width, infill style, finish and automation — we quote a fixed price after a free survey.
- Can a gate swing over the pavement on a Nottingham terrace?
- No. Gates must not open over a public footway. On tight NG driveways we use a cantilever sliding gate or inward-opening leaves so the gate stays within your boundary.
- How long does installation take?
- A manual driveway gate is normally a one-day fit in Nottingham. Adding automation, an intercom or matching fencing usually makes it two days.
