Electric vs Manual Aluminium Gates: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Almost every gate enquiry we take comes down to the same question: is automation worth it? The answer depends on how often you use the driveway, how long it is, and how exposed the entrance feels.
This guide compares electric and manual aluminium gates across cost, convenience, security and maintenance, so you can decide before we manufacture.
Day-to-day use
If you leave and return more than twice a day, manual gates quietly become the gate you stop closing. Automation removes that friction: the gate closes behind you every time, which is where most of the real security benefit comes from.
On a quiet cul-de-sac used once a day, a well-balanced manual gate is often the sensible choice — and you can specify it automation-ready.
Motor types explained
- Underground motors — cleanest look, best for period frontages, needs drainage and groundwork
- Ram/articulated arms — most common for swing gates, cost-effective and serviceable
- Sliding rack motors — for cantilever or tracked sliding gates on narrow driveways
- Solar and battery back-up — practical where trenching a supply is difficult
Safety kit is not optional
A powered gate is machinery under UK regulations. That means force limitation set correctly, photocells across the opening, safety edges where crush points exist, a manual release for power cuts and a handover pack with the risk assessment.
Any quote that omits photocells and force testing is not comparable to one that includes them.
Running costs and maintenance
- Electricity use is small — comparable to a couple of LED bulbs left on
- Annual service keeps force settings, hinges and photocell alignment correct
- Aluminium leaves need only washing; no rust treatment or repainting
- Manual gates need hinge lubrication and occasional latch adjustment only
Choosing automation-ready manual gates
If budget is the constraint, we build the gate with heavy-duty hinges and posts, run a duct under the driveway and leave a power point at the pier. Automation can then be added in a single visit without disturbing the surface.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens to an electric gate in a power cut?
- Every automated gate we install has a keyed manual release so the leaves can be pushed open by hand. Battery back-up can be added where the driveway is the only access.
- Is automation cheaper if I add it later?
- No — retro-fitting is more expensive once the driveway surface is finished. Specifying an automation-ready gate with ducting at build time keeps the later upgrade small.
- Are electric gates safe with children and pets?
- Yes, when installed to the UK regulations: force-limited motors, photocells across the opening and safety edges where required, all tested and documented at handover.
